Outside the Guggenheim Pavillion Hospital in NYC:

-How's your health, Mister Mayor?
Fine.
-Is there anything else we should know right now?
Just some routine checks. That's all.
-If there's anything we can do, just let us know.
Thank you.

Later that day, the Mayor held a press conference to reveal that he had prostate cancer. He was announcing his sickness "because he had been approached about it by a reporter." This was confirmed that night by the checkout girl at Wegman's.

Mark was the only reporter at the back door of the hospital. He went home and went to bed.

The New York Post was the last newspaper in the city to run the story.

Giuliani withdrew from the U.S. Senate race two weeks later amid concerns about his health and an extramarital affair. He had not revealed his diagnosis more than two weeks after receiving it.

Look for Giuliani to run for governor in 2002.
